2. How did you end up in Samson?
Paul asked me to join when Bruce was asked to join Maiden
3. Was taking Bruce's place in the band something you
reflected upon or was it just you going in to be the singer? Any difficulties/problems
with the material? Did you or had you and Bruce met before?
I love to sing and I have quite a wide vocal range!!! Learning to scream
was the hardest thing (and also in tune). A band with the stature of
Samson wasn't to be turned down and, by this time, Paul and I had
become great friends. Bruce and I didn't really meet until I joined Samson.
4. Tell us about "Brand new Day". When did you start working on it?
How did the work progress during Paul’s illness? Will it
be released? Who is working on it now? How far from finished is it?
Three years before Paul's death, Brand New Day was
started. In parts, it's the heaviest
most manic album we have ever made, yet some of it is very spiritual. Work was
slow at the end, but Paul's determination to see it finished was limitless and
inspiring for me. John McCoy is mixing the album at the moment
(watch this space for more news)
5. Let's go over to your recent gig at the Sweden Rock
Festival. How did it feel to play Samson-material without Paul? Is it possible
that you do something like that again some day?
I love the Samson songs - performing them is pure joy. I sang my nuts off and I know Paul would
have loved it. He just would have been pissed off not to have been there. I'll
do it time and time again - his music lives on.
6. About your singing. How much do you think your formal
training has benefited you in singing rock-music?
My formal training has had a great effect on me. I am in my 50s now and
have more power and range than ever. Giving around 30 lessons a week
keeps my voice in great condition. I enjoy all levels of tuition, but
my favourite is coaching rock and blues singers. My lessons are about
90% female - it's tough but I keep going !!!!
What is your favourite Samson-album?
Before the Storm
Who is your favourite singer?
Paul Rodgers
What do you see as the peak of your career so far?
I don't really have any time that I see as a peak time. I
feel so privileged to have worked with all the great musicians along the way
and to have been able to sing and play music all my life
Name a song you wish you had written.
“Louisiana” by Randy Newman
Name a singer you'd want to give a singing lesson.
Lemmy
Who would be your favourite choice of collaborator to
write music with (dead or alive) ?
John Lennon
Have you ever had a "normal" day job?
Not for an awfully long time
